Sunny San Diego

What other time of the year is a good time for traveling? Spring break! My pilot and I were ready to go scope out some beaches near San Diego for our upcoming nuptials. We both love the beach and wanted a beach wedding, but we needed somewhere that was going to be close enough where family members and friends did not have to travel across the country to get to.

I had never been to California. It is a fascinating place. There are endless things to see and do in most of the cities. We ended up staying on Coronado Island. Right across from where we stayed there was a beautiful hotel called the Hotel Del Coronado . It was one of the most grandest hotels I have ever seen and it was right on the beach. We learned that it has a lot of history and it is supposedly haunted! This hotel was built in 1888 and it is going to be 125 years old this year. It was recognized as a national landmark in 1977 and is the number-one wedding destination in the United States. We both loved it at first sight. Before we made a decision though we had to scope out other hotels along the beaches first, but we both knew deep down this was the one!
One of the other places we went to was in La Jolla. La Jolla is located along San Diego's coastline. It is known for Black's Beach, its Cove, Marine Street beach, and Torrey Pines Golf Course. While we were there we went to the cove and saw all the harbor seals that hang out there! They sound exactly like dogs barking and it was really stinky! It was really neat to see them all going in and out of the water and basking on the cliffs, even if they were really smelly. While we were there my pilot had to see the infamous Torrey Pines Golf course, home of the Buick Invitational. I had never heard of it, but then again, I am not golfer...yet. We also went whale watching! We were really focused on looking at other beaches, can you tell??

We also went to Old Town San Diego, which is the "birthplace" of San Diego and the first Spanish settlement in California. If you like Spanish culture then this is the place to visit within the United States. There are several naval bases in San Diego. Did you know there was really a Naval training program called Top Gun? I just thought it was the name of the movie, but thanks to a little history lesson from my pilot, now I know. Top Gun is no longer up and running in San Diego though. Since we were on the discussion of planes and jets, we also stopped to tour the USS Midway Museum. Afterwards we needed some much needed food and relaxation and wanted to see the night life in downtown San Diego so we headed over to the Gaslamp quarter for some fine dinning and entertainment.

After lots of time thinking and looking at other options, we still were hooked on the Del Coronado. We booked an interview with a wedding coordinator there, found out our options and reserved November 23, 2012 for our wedding date. Planning a destination wedding was not easy, but we did it and our wedding was unforgettable!

  1. Oh my gosh, your wedding was truly magical! Love, love the sand castle. Was that your idea or does the hotel do that as part of the package? It was fun to see the original picture at the top of the blog and then to see you standing in front of it in your wedding dress! I can't believe you guys just chose California and found a venue for the wedding! What an exciting adventures you two have already had together! And the best is yet to come! 2. Thanks Kathy! It has been and adventure. There is a guy who makes sand castles on the beach and had heard there was going to be a wedding. He asked for our names and made us one on his own. Pretty nice huh?!
